Sugar Intake, Frequency of Sugar Intake, Adolescent GirlsAbstract
Dietary patterns have increasingly become a lifestyle factor among adolescents, particularly characterized by frequent consumption of snacks and sugar-sweetened beverages that are high in calories, sugar, and fat. Continuous consumption of such foods and drinks poses a considerable risk of obesity. This study aimed to analyze the amount and frequency of sugar intake among adolescent girls in Tasikmalaya City. A quantitative approach was employed using an observational research design with a cross-sectional method. The study population consisted of female students aged 16–18 years enrolled in public high schools in Tasikmalaya City, with a total of 342 participants. Data were collected using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Statistical analyses were performed using the Mann–Whitney and Chi-square tests. The findings revealed significant differences in the frequency of sugar consumption based on body weight (p = 0.001), BMI-for-age (p = 0.005), sugar intake (p < 0.001), and BMI-for-age categories (p = 0.024). These results indicate that effective interventions, such as the implementation of sugar taxes, restrictions on advertising and marketing, and the inclusion of warning labels on sugar-sweetened beverages, may contribute to reducing excessive sugar intake and preventing obesity among adolescents.
