Critical Thinking Skills, Elementary School Students, Science LearningAbstract
This study is expected to explore the understanding of elementary science of 5th grade elementary school students and their ability to think critically in three elementary schools, namely SDN JANGKANG I, SDN LIDAH KULON IV, AND SDN MOJOTENGAH II. By using questionnaires and surveys and having 10 open-ended items, this paper is based on their critical thinking competency indicators. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed qualitatively in an effort to see the pattern of students' responses and their ability to connect scientific ideas and be reasonable. The results of the analysis showed that most students had understood science as the study of living organisms, experiments, and observations. They also began to demonstrate critical thinking skills, although limited to the introductory level. Learners were mostly given information from instructors and books without going through an assessment or questioning process. This requires pedagogy to encourage more discovery, discussion, and problem solving. This study proposes the improvement of inquiry learning strategies and the development of metacognitive skills to further improve students' overall critical thinking skills
