Mastering the Basics: C-Programming Workshop for SMAM 1 Gresik

Abstract

The rapid development of information technology demands early mastery of digital competence and computational thinking skills, including at the secondary school level. However, programming education in Indonesian high schools still faces limitations in curriculum, qualified educators, and practical facilities. This community service activity aims to provide a fundamental understanding of algorithms and programming logic, train students in writing simple programs using the C language, and foster students' interest in information technology. The activity was conducted on May 9, 2026, at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik, involving 38 tenth-grade students with no prior formal programming experience. The implementation method included preparation, material delivery, hands-on practice, mentoring, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests.

The results showed an improvement in students' understanding of basic programming concepts, including syntax, variables, data types, and user input, as reflected in higher post-test scores compared to pre-test scores. Beyond cognitive gains, the activity also increased students' confidence, willingness to ask questions, and enthusiasm toward programming.

The choice of the C language was considered strategic, as it serves as a foundation for further learning in Arduino-based IoT applications and for programming courses at the tertiary level. This activity is expected to serve as a model for sustainable training programs to strengthen students' digital literacy and prepare young generations for digital transformation and the industrial revolution.
