Abstract

Character development in early childhood is a crucial foundation for developing positive behaviors and habits that will influence their future lives. One relevant approach to support this process is an environment-based learning model, which provides children with opportunities to learn through real-life experiences and direct interaction with their surroundings. This study aims to describe the application of an environment-based learning model to improve the character of 4-5-year-old children at Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 42 Kindergarten in Gresik. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, with the subjects consisting of the principal, a teacher, and two 4-5-year-old children selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results show that environment-based learning implemented through the Sedekah Sampah (Trash Charity), Operasi Lingkungan (Environmental Operation), and Garden for Education programs fosters caring, responsibility, and cooperation in children. Caring is evident in increased awareness of maintaining environmental cleanliness, responsibility is evident in children's consistency in carrying out assigned tasks, while cooperation develops through the ability to share roles, help friends, and complete activities together. These findings suggest that environment-based learning can be an effective strategy for instilling character values in a natural, meaningful way, and in accordance with the developmental characteristics of early childhood.
