Abstract

Capture fisheries activities in Desa Banjarkemuning are dominated by small-scale fishers who commonly use passive fishing gear in the form of gillnets. The characteristics of this fishing gear are closely related to catch selectivity, impacts on aquatic habitats, and the sustainability of fish resources. An assessment of the environmental friendliness of fishing gear was conducted to describe the compatibility of fishing practices with sustainable fisheries management principles. Data collection was carried out from November to December 2025 through field observations and structured interviews with 30 fishers who operate gillnets as their primary fishing gear. The evaluation of environmental friendliness was conducted using a scoring method based on nine criteria adapted from the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization. These criteria include gear selectivity, habitat impact, catch quality, fisher safety, consumer product safety, by-catch level, effects on biodiversity, the potential capture of protected species, and social acceptance among fishing communities. The results show that the gillnet fishing gear obtained a total score of 28.73 out of a maximum score of 36, indicating that it falls into the category of very environmentally friendly fishing gear. The catch composition consisted of eight fish species, including six main catches and two by-catch species. The dominance of target catches indicates relatively good gear selectivity with a low level of by-catch. Gillnet operations in the study area demonstrate fishing practices that do not significantly damage aquatic habitats and produce good-quality catches.
