Pelatihan Keselamatan Berkendara pada Siswa/i SMA/SMK di Kabupaten Gresik

Abstract

Purpose – This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and awareness of senior high school and vocational school students in Gresik Regency regarding safe, responsible, and traffic-compliant riding behavior. It also sought to encourage adolescents to recognize accident risks and adopt preventive road-safety practices when using motor vehicles.

Design/methodology/approach – The activity was implemented at three partner schools: SMK NU Gresik, SMK Manbaul Ulum Kebomas, and SMK YASMU Gresik. An educational and participatory approach was applied through several stages, including the identification of partner needs, delivery of safety-riding materials, interactive discussions, driving-safety simulations, and learning evaluation. Participants’ knowledge was measured using pre-test and post-test instruments administered before and after the training.

Findings – The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in participants’ knowledge following the safety-riding training. The average test score increased from 2.5 in the pre-test to 8.0 in the post-test, representing an improvement of 5.5 points or 55 percentage points on a ten-point assessment scale. The most notable improvements were found in participants’ understanding of the causes of traffic accidents, traffic regulations, the functions of road signs, responsible riding practices, and the importance of using helmets that comply with Indonesian National Standards. These findings indicate that school-based safety-riding education combining theoretical instruction, participatory discussion, practical simulation, and evaluation can effectively strengthen road-safety awareness among adolescents.

Originality/value – This activity provides a practical school-based safety-riding education model that integrates knowledge-based instruction with interactive and experiential learning. The model offers a preventive approach to developing traffic awareness and responsible riding behavior among young motor-vehicle users. It can be replicated and further developed through sustained collaboration among schools, universities, government agencies, law-enforcement institutions, and other road-safety stakeholders.
